We’re coming to a close on Season 3 (I should drop the seasons bullshit) of The Gazebo On The Go. The Gazebo is our top podcast. How do I judge that? Because it’s officially our longest running scheduled podcast.

After being around for over two years we have finally got our iTunes feeds working properly. The site is running incredibly smoothly.

And then the iPad came along. The problem? Hold on while I get a tad geeky on you. We have a flash audio and video player on the site that isn’t compatible with the iPhone or iPad. Even worse: Flash is dead, buggy, and causes more problems then it is worth. Even more worse: I use Firefox (and so should you). The issue? Open source fanatics want to require video only to be embedded as Ogg Vorbis. Not MP3 or MP4 like we use on the site. We currently make Flash versions of all of our videos, which makes the video look bad, requires another file, and is usually 10% bigger then the MP4 file we post. Firefox, instead of being pro-compatibility like they usually are, is using their users as political gain to try and convince every to go Ogg Vorbis. We will never go Ogg.

Our summer plan at Awesome Inc is to fix the video and audio player on the site and release The Gazebo On The Go iPhone app. Hopefully.

A History of The Gazebo On the Go

When Jake and Allyn started the podcast one year ago they turned on Skype, hit record, and literally had no idea what they were going to do. Jake didn’t want the show to be too similar to Allyn’s vBlog and Allyn was doing as he was told. Jake decided to start off with talking about something and they would do a couple of segments and see which one was usable. They ended up doing five segments before calling it a night. Jake listened to the recordings and decided that they were all brilliant and stitched it together with some instrumental part of a ska song he liked. This built the outline of the worlds greatest podcast.

Jake and Allyn decided to do this podcast once a week while they were in a college semester, the fall and spring seasons were formed. This gave them twelve weeks, recording one podcast a week. After seeing the initial success of the twelve episodes the season finale live show was created.

Back during the last election Jake and his buddy Matt did a live stream of the counting of the electoral votes. This not only was live, but live with video. Jake had to manually man the switcher and get people calling in on Skype on the screen. That is a complicated thing to do by yourself. During Season 2 of The Gazebo On The Go, Jake decided to do live audio of all the future shows, and this tradition continues into Season 3.

There’s a new show Jake is experimenting with. Jake likes to do this during the off-season of The Gazebo, for the record. This show is called At the End of the Day with Jake. This will be a slightly funny podcast about Jake’s day. Short, long, however long Jake can go on. My thoughts on the results:

I was surprised how many people enjoy The Gazebo News. I mean, it is the entire point of the show and we would never get rid of it, it’s just shocking compared to the other results. Some of the stuff in the favorite segment list I just have to ask: What the hell is wrong with our listeners? You guys are crazy! Necrophilia jokes really? Okay next show is all Chuck Norris jokes and pirate vs ninja debates. Oh, and Allyn will wear all Hot Topic clothing and Fall Out Boy will be our intro music. Just kidding, I love you guys, but sometimes I wonder.

What really shocked me was how many people were passionate about the segment breaks. I thought it wouldn’t matter to the listener, but I was wrong. I am going to guess it is because you guys are busy people. Our listeners have 5 minute lunch breaks at the Seven Eleven and need the show in chunks so you can keep up easily. Also: our listeners have short attention spans. Again, I tease.

Thanks to everyone for taking the survey! Season 3 is under heavy crafting to bring you the same on-the-spot humor we’ve been doing since episode one.

Some great examples of podcasting ads are:

• The Totally Rad Show – they are *very* sincere and add a mild joke.
• Never Not Funny – they talk about the ad and sometimes in a way the advertiser themselves have to have a sense of humor about.
• Film Riot – these people are a freaking genius. They do a short movie-style clip for their ads that are no only very well done but hilarious.

Some examples on how NOT to do podcasting ads:

• This Week in Tech – I love Leo to death but his ads range from 2 minutes to 20 minutes long where he goes on like a mindless drone about a product. He says he truly loves the product, and I believe him, but after 2 minutes I wish he would just shut up.
• Diggnation – Another show I love but they have pre-roll and ads in the middle of the show. Okay, that’s not too bad, but it gets worse: they have around five sponsors. That is way too many. (10 ads in one 45 minute show).

Here’s my theory on ads:
Limit them. The Gazebo will only have 1 at the beginning and that is it. If I start letting two ads on, they won’t feel the need to compete and will lower how much they pay. Limiting the amount of advertisers will lead to them competing to be the advertiser for your show.

Read the points, don’t be a whore.
We will have fun with the ads but we won’t read ad copy. We will promote the product in a positive way and a funny way.

Make it short and sweet and good to eat.
You hate ads, I hate ads. We start doing long ads, we start losing viewers. We’d rather give the advertiser the finger than lose a viewer that way. Jake and Allyn would rather make an offensive joke to turn you off then read an ad. Takes more skill that way.

Where the ad revenue will go:
100% of the money we receive, like with donations and merchandise, go directly to the show. New microphones and etc. No profits for us. That’s not to say that when we eventually become profitable that won’t change though.

I hope I have made our intentions clear. We are still working this stuff out. Hell, we haven’t even got an advertiser yet, but we hope to.

We want to wise up and get our stuff together. What will change in Season 3? I cannot say much but it will be the same show, new guests, and more awesome. I want to do every show live, but I do not know how possible that is right now.

All of our podcasts are still here, I just took the shows that have been hooked up to a feeding tube off the list of active podcasts and put them in a vault. The Vault is where all our shows that are no longer active go. They may come back, but for now they are not being updated.

When I was 14/15 years old my friends and I started work on what I guess eventually evolved into what Awesome Inc is today. We called it ZPTV, ZicklePop Television. While going through some of my old junk I found the DVD we made. Ripped it. Uploaded it. I plan on uploading some to the Specials section for the next couple of weeks, not because it’s good, but because I was such a cute kid. That and my friends all reference these videos and the new friends have never seen them.

Truck is the video version of The Gazebo on The Go podcast. For the most part you do not actually have to watch it, just listen. This podcast is easier to record in that there is no Skype to set up, Jake just turns on a camera and hits record. The length of the podcast will vary and the person Jake is talking to will constantly change. You might recongnize some of the people who appear from previous Gazebos.

So the simplicity of Truck over Gazebo may not make sense to you, but it does to me. We hope you enjoy it. The Gazebo is probably going to take a summer break (after next week), but we will still be pushing out content week after week!

Now when you have loads of large videos on your site you don’t want to do that if you don’t, so I’ve updated to the latest WordPress and swapped from Podpress to Blubrry PowerPress. Luckily, everything worked out fine. (Except the user interface of WordPress 2.7 looks like butt.)

Unfortunately there was no reason to upgrade and the Big Brother Dreamhost could come along tomorrow and say we can’t put flash on our site or XHTML 4.0 Strict.

We’ve learned from Revision3 that you do not need a studio. We’ve learned from Buzz Out Loud that daily tech news does not work when there is no news. Our most important lesson is from Merlin Mann that we don’t need to do podcasts on a schedule but release good content when we have it. We’ve learned from our experiences that we are pretty freaking awesome (and the Blackberry isn’t).

So the crew of Awesome Inc have put together our cyborg heads and cut through the static electricity and have come up with the best formula for a podcast ever. C’mon what is you’re favorite thing in the world? Gazebos. Hell yeah. Now what’s your biggest issue with a Gazebo? It’s not portable! We’ll we found a truck carrying freakin gazebos at 75 miles per hour and we’re gonna hijack that truck and drive it into your ear buds! That’s right! We’re bringing you THE GAZEBO ON-THE-GO PODCAST!

So this past week has been an amazing one for all of us at Awesome Inc! Kyle dressed up as a Storm Trooper and terrorized local businesses and made the day of children he met. Dude, don’t care how dorky and well virginy it may look, it’s still cool. You can see video of his adventures on his YouTube account.

Last night Allyn was on Indie Radio Chattanooga with his band Disarmed. The podcast from that show is not yet out but keep checking for an hour long interview with the band!

Oh and about me! So last Wednesday on Jake’s vBlog I reviewed the Blackberry Storm and made some honest points about how it does not have basic email features that any “email device” should have. By doing this you would have though I had killed a baby, I got so much hatemail. People contacting me to call me an.. well.. we don’t use those words at Awesome Inc. On YouTube it was pretty much your 12 year-old white supremecist with a Blackberry response, some comments on the site demanding I take the video down. I am tempted to do more podcasts on why the Blackberry Storm sucks because it is just an awful device (and it brings viewers fast). Oh and they called me an Apple fanboy. Am I? Check out my latest blog post guys, I am not to happy with Apple right now.

Our most popular show, Mr. B Saves the World, is being canceled. Sure Mr. B brought us lots of revenue and marketing opportunities but we can’t afford it in this down market. With jobs being more and more scarcse it pains me to say this but we will also be firing Mr. B. All of the past episodes of Mr. B Saves the World will remain on hand and we will release one more episode this Sunday.

Now don’t think Awesome Inc is “lost” or anything, we will make up for it by letting anyone with a YouTube account post fart jokes at the all new Awesome Inc Beta. If yours is raunchy enough we may pay you, just like we used to pay Mr. B, for your material.

Please do not blog about this and do not ask “Why couldn’t a crappy show like Kyle’s vBlog be canceled!?” because that is like questioning your President: It only makes things worse.

Lets take a look at some of the low rated or just plain awful shows on their network now.

• Systm – This show hasn’t been the same since Kevin Rose and Dan Huard left. (Where is Dan?)
• Tekzilla – This show was hurt by Jessica Corbin when it first came out so they made the smart move and got rid of her. Bad news is they put Veronica Belmont in her place. Veronica and Patrick Norton now spew such lies as “People don’t use Firewire” and are often wrong on their advice because they apparently have no time to study what the topic is. Update: I don’t hate them, in fact the opposite, I just wish they’d review what they talk about a little more.
• XLR8R – I don’t even know what the hell this is or why it’s here.
• The GigaOm Show – Business news for suit in ties in a young adults network? Talking about Web 2.0? You can see how this show can easily get annoying.
• The Digg Reel – Hey I got an idea lets go take content from Digg.com (worked with Diggnation) but only the sleezy YouTube videos. Oh and let’s only show 30 seconds of it. Reusing other peoples content and adding no real content of your own. You know what? I’m gonna steal this idea. It’s not like anyone watches this show.

And before I go I want to mention their daily “Bite” shows. Tekzilla and Internet Superstar do these daily 30-second videos with some awful content. What’s worse is each one of these 30-second shows has two minutes of advertisements.

We love our friends at Revision3 and we hope they turn it around, but it doesn’t look likely.

Update: This isn’t meant to be mean spirited but more tough love and to say the shows they got rid of surely are not as bad as the other ones.

Season 1 of Mr. B Saves The World has come to an end! Twelve episodes of good advice from the awesome Mr. B and since then we have solved global warming! So since today was the last episode of our great world-saving series we have decided to sign Mr. B for twelve more episodes! Every sunday at 1:00 PM Mr. B will continue bringing you the quality content you believe in until November 2nd when contract negotiations will be in place.

We host our own content. We make it for our self. We do what we want. We will continue to upload our videos to YouTube for easy viewing on devices like the Nintendo Wii, Apple TV, and iPods. We will continue to be on iTunes.

Also to speak of advertisements: We are still accepting ads yes but I need to say I am quite disapointed with some podcast networks and their recent aquirement of advertisements. A five minute show does not need a 30-second ad. So a podcast such as Jake’s vBlog will never have a full-feldged ad. If it ever gets an ad it will be simply “Hi I’m Jake and this is my Awesome Cast, sponored by Google” and then the content flows.

The Purist Form of Art

I just got back from Ska Weekend and when I was there one of the bands said “Yeah we’re not as good as [mainstream band]” I wanted to slap the man. I came to see independent ska bands because they have music that they like and made without force. When a band is mainstream they have to answer to labels. That ruins their music. The same applies to podcasts and other forms of art. I won’t let them get me.

Last week we premiered the new audio podcast Mr. B Saves The World. It is a weekly show where Mr. B tells you within 30 seconds on how to save the world, so totally listen up.

Also today we are launching video comments thanks to the good folks over at Seesmic! So lets get those old webcams from 2004 out and particpate in the Awesome Inc community. If we think your video comment is clever enough we will show it on the shows, so just a little warning.

It’s okay though because the only thing that happened this week in technology was Apple releasing it’s SDK for the iPhone, and while there was some good, I can say that I wasn’t too happy. I think Apple is acting like the father of a girl he wants to keep safe but knows someday she’s gonna go off and find a man.

UPDATE: Digg has gotten back to me: Approved!

On January 18th I submitted my Awesome Inc video blog to Digg. It has been a month and it has still not been approved and Digg has refused to respond to my e-mails. Since then I have submitted the Awesome Inc Tech podcast and it is in the same approval hell.

Why hasn’t Digg approved my podcasts? Awesome-censorship. See Digg thinks they are in fact the most awesome thing on the internet and refuse to co-exist with other forces of Awesome. Digg also has a close bond with Revision3, another video podcast site. You see what I’m getting at? It’s a conspiracy by Kevin Rose to stop the spread of mass-Awesomeness. Arm yourself with knowledge, and e-mails because it is abusive censorship you know!

The Awesome Inc Awe-rmy unite!

I would like to make it clear that we are not selling out. No podcast on this site will endorse a site for cash or any bribes. This does not mean we will not support our advertisers either. The opinions and recommendations heard on this podcast will be made separately.

At the end of the day we do not need money but we can use it, and will be using it, for the greater good of the network and to increase the quality of which.

…she was valued at 100 billion dollars! The share holders are wanting this podcast to split! But we keep on growing! Dr. Allyn will be joining the network to do a podcast so theoretical it may as well be about theories! That will be launching soon.
